The last echo

Some rats do not leave the ship at the end of this year, I am one of those irreducible agents who like to work ahead of the holidays or year-end, especially since the it works better that way: the Caran is closed to the public for a week, which is a guarantee of peace for us in the department funds. I take this opportunity to refine our upcoming exhibition (which I prepared in conjunction with a Conservative Heritage) on "ordinary courts Revolution" (the title has yet to find). This theme

is in fact unknown to most of the French Revolution, which often associate with extraordinary tribunals, including the famous and bloody Revolutionary Court, which forms the W series NA (records of proceedings, the prosecution papers, archives of the Registry, etc.).. Less known is the "ordinary court" common-law thought the new crimes but also those of the Old Regime (those pending at the Parliament of Paris). The Constituent saw himself obliged to create a provisional court to hear these criminal trials (the order of 1 to 5 December 1790 which established the Tribunal Ten ). Then, when the courts district would be established, it was hoped they collect, in addition to civil suits under their normal jurisdiction, the backlog of criminal Chatelet and Parliament and they would start the new criminal trial ... but this was not the If ... (is that you see in this exhibition of about 80 pieces, so exposure "average" in October 2009, and requires considerable work on identifying parts and writing references) ... To finish with my sentence, so this is the order of 13-14 March 1791, which created six courts interim criminals in order to " hear and determine all criminal trials existing before January 25, 1791, when installing district courts "to relieve the district courts (established yet by the law of 25-29 August 1790 but which were not not implemented yet).

These six preliminary criminal courts had a supporting role to relieve the district courts whose records, as we know, have all been burned by the fires of 1871. Conversely, criminal court records have survived intact temporary (trial records of cases, including proceedings initiated prior Therefore, judgments, exhibits many of wallets, tissues stained with blood, swabs for printing false assignats, files ... the short range of the victim and the little thug years 1789). And this fund can therefore be studied to some extent setting up the new Criminal Procedure and the reclassification of offenses. ...

Sorry, sorry, I digress ...

I called this post "The last echo " to alert you to the delivery of the latest issue of "Voices From proofing" which I briefly mentioned the existence in a previous post

December He is a marvel , judge others! to read, just click on this page , then in the top left: Home>> The Department of Conservation> Echoes of the inventory or simply by clicking here . These are two

responsible for documentary research, doctoral student and researcher of their state (one about the artist A. Fourgeron and one on the historiography of the scientific life in Latin America), making the re-examination (burdensome for all archivists) a joyous and exhilarating activity (do not miss their menu of the inventory for 2009 and laminated logs AJ / 19 at the old jumble contemporary sauce Rohan-south or seafood dish as reconditioned Arrivals from the seabed, their pot of money in his new Foccart boxes and finally their intoxicating wine Cotes F preliminary, very good vintage cellars Clisson by the sommelier). But how do they find such ideas?

The last echo is also that of Archives de France that will disappear next year (it would have been over 70 years in 2009) of the RGPP disease that struck all directions of the Ministry of Culture whimper ... but not a disappearance, the death of one gives birth to others and if the DAF dies, then live the SAF (it's now the new name will become the DAF: Service des Archives de France ).

Happy Holidays New Year to all!

This intriguing magnetic (kind of plaque that adorns the metal supports such doors "refrigerators") represents the characters dressed in uniform or of Adam of Eve (Optional). If you treat a lady with no explanation about the context of its source, its origin, history and everything that revolves around, then you're good to be treated in light of perverse prank or obscene . Otherwise, you make him a great pleasure ...

This image was taken from several of the Compendium of Universal History the late fourteenth century whose author is unknown and which claims to do all the history " the nativity of Jesus Christ till the end of the fourteenth ages of the Christian Era, is, to say, till year 1400, when Europe began to take in several respects (...) [it] includes all the time that hath been passed since the world began, till the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, which at least four thousand years since then the Creation to the Flood World.

( on this page, third picture from the left is the allegory)

The First Age, though long, offers few events, but are of great importance. It shows the creation of the world, the origin of all things, the state's first man, he received the Law of God, his difobedience and her punishment, the kind of life his first Defendants, the invention in any art, the genealogy of Noah, corruption became General upon the Earth, the Flood deftroyed that the entire human race, with the exception of Noah and of his children, that would Dievs preferve ", etc..

Shown here in a meadow or orchard, the famous "cunning" in the guise of a human and not a snake (!), Wrapped around the tree of knowledge (which is the only bears fruit), and Adam and Eve that enjoy "eating" (the fruit) which symbolically means "to receive the light" but are they ready to receive it or is it forbidden to receive this pleasure under penalty of being banished from the Garden Eden ... NMR, in conjunction with the Museum of the History of France, who had published in 2007 a box of these images to make educational games fun or pleasant but delicate magnetic (a box pretty beasts, decorated charters, drop caps, etc..) which I bought during the day "Read Day" last October and I gave my neighbor's home which had once remarked of such gadgets on the door of his "refrigerator" adorned the city of Berlin, the last Airbus A748, of zany characters.

My neighbor has made this Christmas gift, no misunderstanding or ambiguity, or indecent or inhibition, much less modesty but in bed, respect, consent and the accession to share the things of the spirit (if they are well explained) ... I wonder what I could offer him next year ...

The Discoveries Gallimard on Archives

With many illustrations (which makes its success), it is numbered 536 in the collection Discoveries Gallimard, it's about 130 pages, full title is " Archives. memory of France, "the author needs no introduction, it is Jean-Pierre Babelon, but it is not alas ... only

At the risk of offending many friends and colleagues of the NA, this is a book waiting for several decades (since the "first language" "in the BNF had appeared ten years ago) and like the new law Archives (also expected for 30 years), gave birth to a mouse (and ugly at that).

For in reality, beyond the knowledge of the collection that I personally find hideous, formless and repulsive (the images are superimposed on the text, which become the fact, illegible), poorly made and deformed (text and margins merge), it is the form, but it gets worse: the background, material written in short, it is downright shameful on the part of professionals.

" Archives. memory of France "is stuffed with errors of all kinds ...

The summary is very tempting though:" laws, decrees, deeds, financial records, letters, telegrams, handwritten notes, maps, posters and photographs, recordings sound, film, digital files ... All these documents are intended to one day come to "Archive" (...).. modest or prestigious, they are the living memory of France. How this heritage has enriched it over time? By what criteria is it a document preserved or eliminated? How and by whom was it classified, inventoried, preserved, studied and valued? For whom and for what purpose? So many questions answered Jean-Pierre Babelon. Emeritus guide, we discover the unknown world archives.

In fact, the authors, it's more ... the world unknown archives ...

Add as [the] piece is " a word little used in the twentieth century who preferred the document "perplexing. And further, limit a document archive to " a list, a letter, report or" the smallest element archives "leaves me wondering: what definition to give then a sound document, a document or audio-visual a digital document?

Then we limit the function of a secretary of documentation (sdoc) as that of " help responsible for Documentary Studies (Ced)"! (This is on page 114). And why not take their coffee or mopping the floor (!). I know many colleagues who are not happy to read such all the nonsense that in most cases, are more resourceful sdoc that Ced that for 9/10th of them were mere librarians, who with a stroke of a pen (ministerial) integrated Ced's bodies 10 years ago (before this prestigious body mass integration of librarians as the corps had only a handful of research officers) and I do not even speak individual contractors and contractors who have maintained a small half hour before a jury of junk and have well integrated body of Ced ... we had, moreover, the nerve to call this simple maintenance ... "contest" competition "Tree" to be precise!. Yet it was enough to Babelon and others to open and read a couple of seconds the missions and responsibilities of each body they describe (Decree of October 25, 1995 for sdoc and Decree of 19 March 1998 for Ced) to avoid write such nonsense ...

Okay I will stop here, but wonder why (page 75) citing the name of Jacques Monicat as one of the creators of the section "private archives" in 1949? Bertrand Gille, one of the leading specialists in business archives, I agree, but Jacques was Monicat certainly a Chartist recognized for his work in the funds of central minute of Parisian notaries and secondarily as treasurer of the FFA and historian in the History of French people ... but no more! So here

yet another "first language" "a bright future ... in a library setting.
